Chapter 4

Saturday night

Mira

“Okay, Mira, you got this. It’s just a simple get-together. Nothing you can’t handle. Besides, it’s Barrett’s birthday. And if you’re going to try and have a real relationship with the man, you can’t blow off his birthday party. Isn’t that right, Cougar?” I look to him for reassurance, but all I get is a blank stare.

“How about you, Sugar? Got anything to add?” I ask, turning to the newest member of our family. As promised, Barrett took me to his sister’s house to pick out a new playmate for Cougar. The moment I saw the light brown and cream tabby, I fell in love. But I still get nothing. Apparently, neither one of them is in the mood to play counselor.

So much has happened this past week that it’s hard to wrap my brain around it. Barrett coming on to me. Us deciding to be more than friends. I thought things would be awkward between us after our talk on Wednesday. But so far, things have been the same as always. I have a suspicion, though, that is due to the fact we haven’t told anybody about us yet. We’ve been living in our own little bubble for the past few days. But tonight is Barrett’s birthday party at Keller’s, and the first time we’ll be out in public as girlfriend and boyfriend. Barrett says it’s no big deal, but I still feel a bit uneasy.

“Shit,” I cry out. All this musing and stalling has made me late. I rush through, getting dressed, glad that this shindig will be causal. I don’t have time for full glam. Not that I would go all out if I did, I’m pretty simple when it comes to fashion. My phone rings just as I’m ready to sprint out the door.

“Hey, birthday boy,” I say, locking up behind me.

“Hey, Meerkat. Are you here yet? I don’t see you.” I can barely make out his words, the noise from the bar is so deafening.

“Well, technically, I’m in the building. That’s some ruckus you’re making down there. I can barely hear myself think. Man, you’d think you were a celebrity, not some local smocal turning old,” I say jokingly.

“Old?! I’m only twenty-five! You’re just saying that cause you’re barely out of your teens,” Barrett scoffs.

“Barely out of my teens! I’m only a year younger than you, dipshit! Besides, I’ll have you know that I’ve lived, mister. You couldn’t even fathom the things I’ve seen,” I retort. I’m halfway down the stairs, and I spot the top of Barrett’s head. He’s at the bottom, leaning against the wall.

“Right cause helping Cougar traverse the treacherous terrain of his cat tower is living.” He laughs.

“Anyways,” Barrett continues. “I don’t have time to trade ridiculous yet super clever barbs with you. I just called to tell you to get your ass down here. Gotta go, see you soon.”

“Maybe sooner than you think,” I say, enveloping him in a hug from behind. Barrett breaks free and draws me in front of him.
